U.S. Department of Homeland Security Awards Cyber Visualization Contract to Secure Decisions

Division of Applied Visions, Inc. to Advance its Network Security Visualization Product to Help Protect the U.S. Information Infrastructure against Attacks

VIAssist LogoNORTHPORT, NY, September 19, 2008 – Applied Visions, Inc. (AVI) has been awarded a multi-year research and development contract from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate. Under this contract, AVI’s Secure Decisions Division will advance its visualization technology to enable cyber defenders to detect and understand threats to the U.S. cyber infrastructure. The technological foundation of this development effort will be Secure Decisions’ VIAssist ™ product, a visualization framework used by computer network security professionals to analyze network traffic and security event data.

Secure Decisions was one of thirteen contract awardees in the DHS Cyber Security Research and Development Center’s $11.7 million in grants, chosen from approximately 700 registrants from industry and academia. Under this contract Secure Decisions will provide the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) with an enhanced version of its VIAssist application that includes advanced analytics, automation, and visualization enhancements.

US CERT is a partnership between the DHS and the public and private sectors that was established in 2003 to protect the nation’s Internet infrastructure. US-CERT coordinates defense against – and responses to – cyber attacks across the nation. The VIAssist enhancements will include network traffic analytics tools, automated pattern matching tools, and geographic and network visualizations, giving US-CERT a significant new tool to support their mission.

VIAssist is a scalable, flexible visual analytics framework that incorporates multiple, synchronized visualizations of network and security data into a unified system. It was named a top technology solution at the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) in 2006. VIAssist has been specifically valued for allowing users to quickly focus on areas of concern from global views of network activity down to individual IP address activity, and to rapidly discover patterns and anomalies that are indicative of security risks.
