The Secure Decisions Division of Applied Visions, Inc. is a small R&D firm providing software solutions to help professionals explore and analyze massive amounts of critical data to make better decisions.
Our R&D areas include: cyber security visualization, impact analysis of cyber incidents, security and information value metrics, visualizations and games for security training, and cyber test range support.
Our customers and collaborators include Air Force Research Lab, Naval Research Lab, DARPA, Department of Homeland Security, US-CERT, and the intelligence community.
We are looking for candidates who can participate in R&D from the proposal through execution stages, and who can work collaboratively with a software production team to transition the research into commercial and government cyber security products.

y working with teams, be capable of team leadership, be able to work several projects concurrently, and be productive when given high levels of independence and responsibility.
Openings are available at both our Northport NY and Albany NY offices. Candidates will be expected to travel on company business approximately 4 days per month on average. You must be a U.S. citizen to work here, and will be required to apply for a Top Secret security clearance.

4. Position: Project Manager
We are seeking a project manager to manage the development of advanced technology and research in the fields of information security and homeland security. Education in computer science, information security, interaction design or human factors as well as experience in applied research management are directly applicable to this position. As a project manager, you will work closely with customers in the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security, the company’s software development staff, and company leadership to ensure that the customer’s requirements for innovative solutions in information security are met on time and within budget by the development team.
Manage applied research and software development projects in the areas of information security, homeland security, information visualization, network simulation, and computer network defense training. This position includes, but is not limited to, the following activities:

1. Position: Information Visualization Researcher
We are looking for professionals with education and experience in information visualization, human-computer interaction, and information security. Candidates must have exceptional communication and writing skills, and experience in information visualization design, implementation, and testing.
Job responsibilities may include:
- Designing novel visualization and interaction techniques to solve the challenges of information security and other domains;
- Implementing prototype software to demonstrate visualization techniques;
- Soliciting requirements and use cases from users, and communicating those to the software development team;
- Preparing for and executing the evaluation and usability testing of developed information visualization software;
- Serving as the information visualization subject matter expert to projects and proposals;
- Supporting the preparation of proposals for research and development funding;
- Managing projects, including serving as Principal Investigator on contracts; and
- Preparing papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals or conferences.
Your qualifications must include:
- Masters or Ph.D. in information systems, computer science, fine arts, human factors, or a related field;
- Three (3) years of postgraduate experience in interaction design and/or development;
- Demonstrated record of publishing in peer-reviewed conferences and journals; and
- Excellent leadership, problem solving, and communication skills.
2. Position: Data-Centric Research Analyst/Developer
We are looking for professionals with education and experience in data mining, pattern mining, cluster analysis, and automated methods for data analysis of computer network and security data.
Candidates must have outstanding communication and writing skills, demonstrated research skills, and expertise in computer networking, security, or metrics.
Job responsibilities may include:
- Researching methods for assigning value to information content;
- Developing ontologies to map complex relationships between network devices and business functions;
- Designing and applying data mining techniques to computer network data;
- Developing data bases, data warehouses, data cubes, Extract-Transform-Load (ETL), and other methods of data loading and storage;
- Optimizing SQL and other methods for data retrieval;
- Supporting the preparation of proposals for research and development funding; and
- Preparing papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals or conferences.
Your qualifications must include:
- Masters degree in computer science, information systems, mathematics, economics, or related field;
- Experience in conducting scientific research;
- Demonstrated record of publishing in peer-reviewed conferences and journals; and
- Excellent leadership, problem solving and communication skills.
3. Position: User-Centered Systems Analyst
We are looking for professionals with education and experience in knowledge elicitation, user-centered design, or development of concepts of operations.
Candidates must have good communication and writing skills, demonstrated research skills, and experience in user-centered design and development of concepts of operations for fielding new technologies.
Job responsibilities may include:
- Capturing requirements, including user experience and operational and usability requirements, and communicating those to the software development team;
- Performing cognitive task analysis and other methods of knowledge elicitation in commercial and government IT operational settings;
- Evaluating and documenting stakeholder and user needs;
- Researching issues related to work practice in cyber security;
- Preparing for and executing the evaluation and usability testing of information visualization software that we develop;
- Preparing concepts of operation for introducing new technologies and processes into operational environments;
- Researching methods for assigning value to information content, mapping machines to missions, and other data mining and analysis topics;
- Supporting the preparation of proposals for research and development funding; and
- Preparing papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals or conferences.
Your qualifications must include:
- Masters degree in information systems, psychology, computer science, human factors engineering, or a related field;
- Experience in conducting scientific research;
- Demonstrated record of publishing in peer-reviewed conferences and journals; and
- Excellent leadership, problem solving, and communication skills.

- Participate in writing proposals to potential funding agencies for applied research and advanced technology development, with an emphasis on software development projects
- Conduct requirements analyses of analysts responsible for defending large enterprise networks from attack.
- Ensure technology being developed meets requirements.
- Monitor usability and quality assurance of technology under development.
- Track schedule and budget.
- Perform market analyses and competitive assessments to position advanced technology to fulfill information security market needs. Regularly meet with technical staff to track progress towards goals.
- Perform literature reviews of peer-reviewed journals that publish scientific articles on information security, information visualization, and network simulation.
- Document all processes, prepare briefings on project status, write technical reports.
- Contribute to scientific publications related to the advanced technology
Your qualifications must include:
- Experience managing technical staff and technical projects
- Demonstrated ability to prepare detailed written reports, prepare budgets, and deliver first-rate briefings.
- Ability to impose organization and structure on ambiguous or ill-defined requirements.
- B.S. or B.A. in Computer Science, Engineering, Human Factors or related disciplines
- Expert use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
- Excellent leadership, problem solving, and communication skills.
- U.S. Citizenship Required.
Pluses:
- CISSP or other information security certification
- Experience conducting R&D or developing advanced technology
- Experience writing grant proposals.
- Recent military experience
- Currently active U.S. Secret clearance.
